Hi, My name is Natalie. I live in Northern Wisconsin and I have never been into birds until this morning I looked up and saw a read headed woodpecker. I basically only see pidgeons here, so it was shocking to see a woodpecker. It was beautiful. I was just wondering if it is strange for a woodpecker to be in Northern WI in the winter. I thought they migrated if they lived this high up. If you know it would be greatly appreciated. I'll check back.

Hello Natalie,

Hmm, interesting question. Are you sure it was a Red-headed Woodpecker? or was it just a woodpecker with a red head?

Red-bellied Woodpeckers also have red on their heads and would be far more likely this time of year than a Red-headed Woodpecker. However, it is not unheard of to find a Red-headed Woodpecker this time of year.

Let me know if you're sure it was a Red-headed Woodpecker. if it was, then I'll check with some of my birding friends and get back to you on just how common they are.

Happy Birding! --Chris

I'm not sure actually. So, it could have been the other type. Either way I'm in love with it. Also, I laughed my butt off when I noticed (after I posted my comment of course) that I had spelled red like head. Let me just say it was late at night...Anyways thanks for the feed back. I'll keeping checking out your blog.I always suppport other teenage wisconsinites!
